Instagram Reels format guide

Design vertical Reels with a clean full-screen composition and enough breathing room for interface elements.

Reels are designed for mobile viewing, so a 9:16 vertical composition is the natural working format. Meta’s Reels guidance emphasizes 9:16 video and keeping important creative elements inside a safe zone.

Use a full-screen vertical layout

A 1080 × 1920 editing canvas is a convenient creator workflow for 9:16 Full HD video. Treat it as your workspace, then keep the main subject and important words comfortably inside the frame instead of hugging the edges.

Think in safe zones

Reels includes interface elements around the video. Avoid placing a price, phone number, subtitle, or key call to action directly against the bottom or side edges. Center-weighted layouts are usually easier to read across different phones.

Make the first frame understandable

  • Start with the subject, result, or question.
  • Keep the first text overlay short.
  • Use subtitles when speech carries important meaning.
  • Check that the focal subject remains visible without zooming.

Before you publish

Watch the export once at normal speed on your phone. Check the first frame, text size, audio level, and whether any interface overlay could cover information that matters.

Reels features and specifications evolve. For paid campaigns or strict delivery requirements, confirm the latest Meta guidance before export.
